POISON: SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS (NB. This has been published)

Medicine that has been prescribed for someone else – not for you – can be dangerous if you take it accidentally. Remember to keep all medicines out of the reach of children.

Most occurrences of poisoning occur in the home – the victims are usually children and usually involve misuse of medication. Best to treat all medicines as potential poisons to be safe.

Once you’ve taken them, store them properly and dispose of them when you’ve done with them – don’t put them in open trash containers or flush them down the toilet – get professional advice if you are unsure.

Treat ALL medicine seriously – don’t call pills ‘candy’ for example – children can soon get the wrong idea.

In particular, know that vitamin tablets are dangerous if taken in large doses, particularly those containing iron – children are very vulnerable to vitamin overdoses.

Check medicines for their expiry dates – if undated, six months old is too old – don’t take anything that you have had for six months or longer.

And watch what you are doing when taking any medicine – keep the light on – make sure the right person is taking the right medicine at the right time and in the correct dosage.

Remember – medicine is supposed to aid your health, not ruin it.
Exercise care – stay healthy – everyone!
